This is the last newsletter that will close with a Scoutmaster’s Minute from me. After four years as Scoutmaster, there is a lot to reflect on, but one line matters enough to put at the center of this message.
And, as always, thank you for allowing me to be part of your scouting adventure.
I have ended every Scoutmaster’s Minute in the newsletter with those words. That was not an accident, and it was never meant to be a routine sign-off. Long before serving as Scoutmaster, that same mindset shaped my time as a Den Leader. Back then, the message was directed to parents because they were trusting an adult leader with time that belonged to their sons and to their families. That sense of trust has stayed with me for more than a decade in Scouting.
That line matters because this is not my Scouting adventure. That adventure happened years ago. This is your adventure in Troop 505. You are the ones doing the work, taking the risks, learning the skills, building friendships, and growing into leaders. The adults are here to help make it possible.
That is also why “Scout-led with adult guidance” matters so much. You choose the direction. You plan, lead, and learn. Adults coach, remove obstacles when needed, keep things safe, and make sure the troop has what it needs. The best moments in a troop happen when you are out front and the adults are supporting from behind, tagging along for the ride and doing just enough to help you succeed.
Being part of that is a privilege. It is a front-row seat to watch confidence build, friendships form, and character take shape. It is also a reminder that fun belongs in the middle of it all. Fun is not a break from the program. Fun is part of the program. When you are laughing while learning to cook, solve problems, lead a patrol, or master a skill, the troop is doing Scouting the right way.
Over these four years, I have been blessed to watch Scouts join the troop, find their place, grow in skill, advance in rank, and have an impact on each other. Some of those moments were big and public. Many were small and quiet. Both kinds mattered.
So tonight, as this chapter closes, that closing line matters more to me than ever. Thank you for the trust. Thank you for the time. Thank you for the chance to walk alongside you as you planned and led your adventures, learned through experience, and built something together.
