With summer here, we’re all shifting into vacation mode and getting gear ready for camp. As Scouts, we talk a lot about “Being Prepared,” but true preparation is a mindset. It’s looking down the trail and building a solid blueprint before you ever step foot on the path.
A couple of weeks ago, we had two meetings fast approaching: a cooking meeting and our hike up Mount Bonnell. Knowing these needed planning and that my own summer travel schedule was hitting a tight window, Benjamin, our SPL, met with Mr. Norman, Mrs. McCoy, and I to make some plans.
The goal was simple: get Benjamin exactly what he needed to be successful. When we sat down, Benjamin took ownership of the plan. He took the tools and resources we provided and mapped out exactly how we were going to run the cooking meeting and dial in the logistics for Mount Bonnell. He recognized that to lead you all effectively, he needed to be thoroughly prepared himself.
That is leadership through competence, making sure you are equipped so you can help others succeed. And that ties directly into one of the core points in the Scout Law: “A Scout is Helpful.” In order for Benjamin to help the troop hold successful meetings, he needed to be prepared.
This summer, as you travel or head to camp, look for opportunities to do a Good Turn. It doesn’t have to be a massive gesture. It’s helping a younger Scout fight with a stubborn tent stake, or noticing when a family member needs a hand before they even ask.
Don’t just hike your own hike. Get prepared, build your plan, and keep your eyes open for the quiet moments where you can turn around and help someone else reach the summit.
